Last Updated on October 19, 2024

A long, winding road

Route 1095 is the mountain road to Mae Hong Son that we usually travel from/to Chiang Mai daily. It is 240 km long and takes about 6 hours through Pai. It is the shortest and most popular tourist route, but it has a lot of twists and turns.

A route that requires careful driving but is rewarded with beautiful, exciting scenery along the way with many places to stop and visit.

This private journey on Route 1095 will make you comfortable. A trip that can be planned for several days, with many accommodations and restaurants to choose from.

Summary of route

107 or 1001 > 1095

Part 1

Find route 1095 to Mae Hong Son

We will start our journey from Chiang Mai, where you will need to avoid the morning rush hour and find the road heading north to take route 107 or 1001, and it will connect to route 1095.

The road conditions have to go through many intersections until you leave Mae Rim District on Route 107 or pass Maejo University for Route 1001.

I usually travel on route 1001, which only passes through the area with heavy traffic up to Mae Jo University. Once you pass that, you will see the countryside.

But you’ll need to turn left onto Route 1414 to reach the intersection where Routes 107 and 1095 are ahead. We call this area Baan Mae Malai.

Part 2

Keep going to Pai

It takes about 2.3 hours and has the most twists and turns on this route. After 30 minutes, the roads start to the mountain and steep terrain for the next 2 hours until you reach Pai.

Part 2 will have the highest number of curves, driving through Huai Nam Dang National Park. So, there are rest areas and beautiful mountain views along the way.

You can stop at the last gas station (Caltex); otherwise, you will find an automatic fuel kiosk, or rest at Pankled Coffee and Mok Fa Waterfall.

Next, my usual stop is Hong Mieng Restaurant on the right of the roadside. Delicious food, and drinks by the pond. Another popular place is 32 Coffee Hill, with very clean toilets.

Supin Restaurant is a van stop of a company in Pai. We don’t usually join in.

Pong Duet Geyser, I recommend seeing my blog first and if you don’t use any other services, go to Lod Cave instead. For those who plan to stay in Pai on the first night, you have enough time to visit.

Now we will arrive at OK Mart (Pit Stop), Prem Pracha’s van rest stop, where the passengers rest for 20 minutes. I will choose My Mom Cafe 1/2 @ Pai which is next door. It is a small shop with good coffee, delicious food, and a piano and drums for you to show off your skills.

The last coffee shop before the winding road, Coffee We The Witch’s House, was quite enjoyable.

Extra and continue part 2

From here, there are fewer restaurants and restrooms. Dara Tea or Khao Soi Je Sing is a good option. There is still a small community of restaurants in this area. It used to be a minibus stop.

Next up is a cafe owned by the Forestry Department, Rak Jang Viewpoint, which used to be a location for Thai movies.

Then you will pass the entrance to Huai Nam Dang National Park, which has a camping ground and beautiful sunrise views.

The highest point of this road is the Doi Mae Ya Checkpoint, where drivers must identify themselves, and we have always considered this a road problem.

Afterward, you will need to use low gear and brake on steep slopes. Just 45 minutes. Please be patient until you reach Ta-Pai Memorial Bridge. You’ll know that this road was built by the Japanese army to march into Burma during World War II.

Just a relaxing 10-minute drive to Pai and lunch awaits you there.

When you hungry

When we start entering the Pai City area, the restaurants and cafes are lined up along both sides from Ta-Pai Memorial Bridge to town.

Pai: Baan Benjarong Restaurant is the taste of royal Thai cuisine. If you find the restaurant opening, I recommend you don’t miss it.

Since both owners are old, the opening and closing times are divided into daytime and evening hours and limit the number of customers a day.

Pai Quick Fact

Pai is well-known and popular among young backpackers, as are affordable guesthouses in the downtown and Walking Street areas. Around the Pai, there were also high-end rooms with full services.

Motorbikes make it easy to get to restaurants and tourist destinations throughout the city. The lovely scenery and friendly atmosphere will make you feel at ease.

If you want to spend a few nights in Pai, make sure you plan ahead. You can ask me for more information about Pai. Although I don’t have much detail on the website yet.

Just in case

It is recommended that you leave Chiang Mai before 8 am for a direct trip to Mae Hong Son or a return trip to Chiang Mai.

Tourists know that this road between Chiang Mai and Pai has the most turns in Thailand. You may feel dizzy, which will cause you to be late.

straight road
Good asphalt and has straight some.

However, we had the opportunity to see a gorgeous hilly landscape, a charming coffee shop, and a stop to see attractions and colorful hill tribe people. You can also arrange places to visit along the way.

If you haven’t booked a room yet, take a look at these recommended places to stay. You can also look for it in the Where to Stay category, which I will try to update more frequently.
